The play tells the story of some of the naïve and enthusiastic Accrington men and boys who rushed to join the local Pals regiment with their friends at the beginning of the First World War They hoped for glory and found the Somme. But much of the drama focuses on the women left at home, so that the brief scenes on the battlefield are balanced by the sometimes funny, sometimes touching scenes of the women’s experiences.
