Outline of Play
The play, which formed part of the Manchester school of writing, was first performed in 1912. It concerns the son of a wealthy Lancashire mill owner who spends part of Wakes week in Llandudno with the daughter of his father’s foreman. Convention dictates that he should marry her but this is the period when the Women’s Suffrage movement was just beginning to achieve results and things turn out slightly differently , which may have been something of a shock to contemporary audiences.
