Outline of Play

The Beaux Stratagem tells the story of two London bucks, Aimwell and Archer, who are down on their luck.  Acting as master and servant, they devise a scheme whereby Aimwell can find a wealthy country lady to marry.  Of course, once the plot is afoot, confused identities, misunderstandings and scheming servants, along with the unwitting intervention of the local highwayman, lead to the complications.

This was one of the first plays to address the topic of divorce from the viewpoints of both sexes.  So controversial was it, that it was in fact banned.  The emphasis on sexual mores, greed and intrigue give it a contemporary edge which we hope will appeal to today’s audience.
