Outline of Play

The play is set in and around the households of Lady Sneerwell, Sir Peter Teazle and the Surface Brothers, Joseph and Charles.  The plot has three strands, which intertwine throughout the play.

The brothers Surface are completely different in character, and the return from India of their uncle, Sir Oliver, who wishes to leave his fortune to one of them, stresses this.  Both brothers are linked to the young Lady Teazle, recently married to Sir Peter, and longing to be thought of a s a proper fashionable London lady.

In her desire to be fashionable, Lady Teazle tries to be part of the cabal which meets regularly and Lady Sneerwell’s to spread scandal, to shar malicious gossip and to ruin reputations.
